Significance of Nirjala Ekadashi - prernamurti

Once Bhima said to Lord Vyasa- O , Sage, I can observe only one fast in a year, please tell me some fast, by observing which I can attain my welfare.

Vyas ji said: observe the Ekadashi fast falling in the month of Jyeshtha(english month June) during Shukla paksha. When one observes the Ekadashi fast from the sunrise time of ekadashi day till sunrise time of next day(dwadashi), and doesn’t consume water at all, that is called Nirjala Ekadashi. One can just do the gargles or take little water to wash the mouth and then throw out. Don’t take the water in. On this day, one who observes fast in such a manner,he, for every three hours of the day, earns the merits of donating lakhs of gold coins. On this day, one, who does the charity, holy bathing, fire sacrifice etc., earns countless merits. In addition to this, one who observes night awakening on this day, their last 100 generations and 100 future generations reach God’s holy abode. On this day, one should donate an earthern pitcher filled with water and sugar to a priest. Next day, i.e on dwadashi, after taking bath, donate water and some gold to a priest. The merits which one gets after performing shraadh(death rituals) during the solar eclipse on Chaturdashi New moon day, same merits one earns, after listening to the significance of this fast.

After listening to this, Bhima started observing this fast.
